1. [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin is finished! THE MASTER POST IS HERE. We ended up with 2 pieces of art and 19 fics and even though RL has kept me from reading a lot of them, everything looks great and I AM GOING TO CATCH UP THIS WEEKEND I SWEAR. (Also, I still can't believe I modded a fic challenge comm. :)

2. For the SGA fen on my flist who haven't seen it yet, [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon is having a John Sheppard love post. Just look at his sad wibbly face in my icon if you don't go and check it out! OH JOHN. YOU ARE MY FAVORITE FOREVER.

3. I got sleep last night! And work should be fairly light today and tomorrow, yay.
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (sga team)
1. I had an a weird but awesome dream.

2. [livejournal.com profile] bookshop posting and then, randomly, there was a STARGATE: ATLANTIS Fandom Primer on your flist which is a must read for anyone who is or has ever been in SGA fandom, and anyone who's not but craned their head over the side of the fandom fence once and wondered what the HELL their neighbors were doing over there. BEST FANDOM EVER THE END.

3. Merlin vid rec!! I watched this too late (see: previous post about failing at lj, etc. etc.) to put it in my [livejournal.com profile] attheroundtable post, which is a shame but OMG YAY.

As The Day Is Fading by [livejournal.com profile] lovestories (Merlin OT4 vid okay maybe OT5 with Lancelot, PG)

I love "White Houses" by Vanessa Carleton. And I love me some Merlin OT4. This vid is the perfect intersection of those loves. Seriously, though, it's beautifully edited, and the song is all about this bittersweet but hopeful loss of innocence and a group of friends, which is why it's utterly perfect for making a Merlin vid. GO SEE IT NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

I was in SGA fandom longer than any fandom I've ever been in before or since. It was a great ride and it's basically over and I've been struggling for a while to sort it all out.

Now thankfully I don't have to because [livejournal.com profile] spike21 has done it for me, and just in time for the finale tonight:

Her thoughts on SGA 5x20 and SGA in general are here- SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY.

Also, after at least a week or so of low-grade fatigue and nausea, I'm prepared to admit that there's a slight possibility that I'm pregnant. And by that I mean getting sick. (AHAHA got you! I hope someone was drinking tea near their computer.) I can feel a cough coming on and I just hope this isn't another bout of Welcome to Your First Winter in New York City Have Some Bronchitis That Lasts For Two Months like last year.

As anyone who knows me will guess, I'm not really good at being sick. I manage to walk that oh so irritating line of wanting everyone to do stuff for me while simultaneously insisting that I don't need any help and what's more I'm not sick anyway. Thankfully for me and all of my friends/family/coworkers/roommates, it doesn't happen often.

I'm going out tonight and meeting someone around lunch tomorrow but after that I think I'll spend the rest of the weekend curled up with my PJs, Brideshead Revisited (1981) Disc 2, a large thing of OJ and a stubborn insistence on mind over matter.
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (dr who barefoot)
After 10 days of travel all over the place and very (VERY) little sleep- between weddings and snoring relatives and one of those fun nights out that ends up with a friend drunk and sobbing into a toilet until 3:30 in the morning- I finally returned to New York late last night to faceplant into my bed. I am really glad to be back home, and work should be mercifully quiet this week.

In fannish stuff, I still have a pretty insane amount of Yuletide to get through though. I think I'm going to hold off on a recs post until I finish- damn me and my completist tendencies!

I did watch the Doctor Who Christmas Special )

I also fianlly managed to make myself watch SGA 5.20 )

PS. I finally got your card, [livejournal.com profile] krazykipper! Thank you! It was lovely! ♥ (And yes you did spell my name right. :)
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (Default)
I haven't been watching SGA since 5.15, but I've been reading more fic lately and I think I've come to a place where the show doesn't make me just sad/bored/pissed off any more. Plus my weakness for leaked media is legion. So:

I just watched the pre-air version of SGA 5x19- Vegas. Spoilers, obviously. )

Where is the fic?

Also, I am saving 5.20 until I have more time and a LARGE BOTTLE OF WINE.
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (Morgana smile)
So I’ve been bad at the internet all weekend, mostly thanks to being busy (including a nice Saturday brunch/laptop party with [livejournal.com profile] volsi) and having a crappy internet connection, meaning that I didn’t watch Merlin or SGA until Sunday afternoon.

I actually have something to say about SGA 5.15- Remnants. Huh. )

Being late to the recapping party, I’ve got nothing spoilery to add about Merlin 1.09, mostly just continuing to want to hug this show to my chest and braid its hair and let it run around it tacky multicolored outfits that it can pull off anyway because AWW. And next week’s episode looks AMAZING.
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (Arthur/Merlin)
Slow day at work, so y'all get treated to my blathering about TV. (Count yourselves lucky I will probaby never finish and post my in-depth 7 page essay on High School Musical.)

I’m going to get my cranky out of the way early and make a brief comment on SGA 5.13 )

ETA: On the other hand, THIS is awesome. *wishes she knew how to quit show, etc. etc.*

Went to a Mad Men Finale Viewing Party with the roommates last night, hosted by the ladies from Basket of Kisses. It was surprisingly fangirly. And Matthew Weiner came by at the end! For serious! Very cool.

Mad Men season finale spoilers. Also, I met Matthew Weiner OMG. )

Lastly, and a happier note, I finally bowed to the collective will of my flist and started watching Merlin. Loving it so far. The premise is intrinsically slashy, and everyone’s adorable and Anthony Head is it and there’s crappy CGI and clichés and ridiculous magic storylines of the week and it’s totally my fandom happy place right now. I really hope that more writers start coming over to play, because I feel that the universe lends itself beautifully to those of us fleeing coming over from a Fandom O’ Crack like SGA. (Note to self, must get icon.)

Also, Merlin fic recs!

There’s [livejournal.com profile] janne_d’s And None But We Can Be Such Kings. This one is really adorable, with good oblivious!Merlin. I also really liked reveal moment near the end- pitch perfect.

One of my very favorites so far is [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch’s Next Time, I Will Remember This And I Will Say 'No'. It actually has a good plot (one of that totally should be an episode). Even better, what could have been just an amusing set up for wacky hijinks and mistaken identities turns into a seriously interesting examination of power and the power dynamics between Merlin and Arthur in particular. It’s not saccharine or schmoopy and it does an excellent job of showing-not-telling (a problem with a lot of fic I’ve read in this fandom so far). Highly recommended!
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (SGA McShep)
When you see this, post a quote from Stargate Atlantis in your journal.

McKay: [third time] You shot me.
Sheppard [exasperated] Yes, Rodney, I shot you, and I said I was sorry.
Ronon: You shot me, too.
Sheppard: I'm sorry for shooting everyone!
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (SGA McShep)
From David Hewlett’s twitter:

dhewlett: Shooting the last scene, of the last episode, of Stargate Atlantis...2 more days of filming but this is it...thanks so much everyone!

*wibble*

However, I dunno, I must say that but for the Shrine, Season 5 hasn’t quite grabbed me yet, so I’m getting a little less sad that this will be the end.

Also, even more unpopular fannish opinion about Stargate Universe under the cut )

In other news, once my bonus comes in from work on Thursday, I’ll be getting a new laptop! Finally! Guess who managed to go over a month without a laptop? ME. Who believed I could do that without going crazy? NOT ME, actually. *surprised at self* At any rate, this might mean I post more often (haha, probably not).

Right now, I’m planning on this one. It’s lightweight, only $400, runs XP instead of Vista, and since I’ll really only be using it to a) surf the internet and b) download TV shows/movies it should serve nicely for what I can afford right now. Even though there are some complaints that the keyboard and touchpad are tiny, it’s sure as hell a step up from using my iPod touch to go online, which is what I've been doing to get by.

That said, if anyone has any other recommendations, please let me know!
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (SGA McShep)
Wow, this is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass your laptop has drowned and you don’t check your flist until you get to work.

D:

I spent a good 5 minutes looking around my desk and trying to get ahold of myself. However, I’ve managed to work through the shock and the sadness and have reached the point where I’m the metaphorical drunk at the fandom bar slurring “I love you guysh!” (Read on if you dare.)

I came to SGA in May ’05, and it’s been a great three years. You guys took a decent sci-fi show, and turned it into one of the weirdest, wackiest, most wonderful fandom experience I’ve ever had. The collective imagination of the SGA fandom has always impressed me. You’ve produced some of the most brilliant, heartbreaking, lovely, and just plain crazy stories (and vids! And multimedia fandom experiences!) I’ve seen anywhere. I’ve loved nearly every minute of it- k, we won’t talk about Irresistable/Irresponsible. (And even that inspired my favorite podficced story EVER!)

Anyway, what I want to say is that SGA is awesome, but you guys are awesomer, and even if everything winds down and we all disperse to different corners of the internet, let’s think about the good times.

Hey, remember that time when The Flan wanted to go into space over at [livejournal.com profile] space_flan? And the Flan’s hair mood theme? And the Hewlett’s heart-shaped ass?

Remember that time when you stayed up until three in the morning reading the latest epic installment of A Farm in Iowa?

Remember that time when you put your hand over your face and said, “Oh, SGA” (cookie porn, I’m looking at you)?

I’ll sign the petition and join [livejournal.com profile] fight_for_sga, but even if this is final season (and I'm a pessimist who's been here before, so..) why don’t we do something in addition to shaking our fists at Sci-Fi? I think it’d be nice to send our boys and the team off with some sort of farewell fic/art/whateverthefuckyouwant festival. Hell, I’ll even write something for it. Why don’t we pull up our britches and remind everyone why it’s SGA: We Go There? I’m sure we could throw the greatest goodbye party lj has ever seen. Who’s with me??? (Yeah! \o/)

….Aaand that done, I’m going to drag my maudlin, overly-cinematic ass off the bar table and try to do some work.
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (dr who barefoot)
Just added some new friends off the McShep Friending Meme, and it inspired me to get off my lurking butt and use this journal for its intended purpose and post stuff. *waves at the new folks*

First, a very brief life update because, well, not much has happened. My job's going all right (I have health insurance now, say what, working for The Man!). It's (almost) nice and springy around here- and oh, how I miss the southern coast of Virginia right now, let me tell you. I've also been pretty busy lately hanging out with folks and watching American Idol in my PJs with my roommates.

Also, lots of people visiting me soon, like [livejournal.com profile] duckfish (I think??), [livejournal.com profile] corporatepiracy, and [livejournal.com profile] sovietkitsch, and my engaged friends from college whose wedding I will be in at the end of this year.

And, in more fannish related things:

1. Meg and I are co-writing something for the [livejournal.com profile] reel_sga challenge. (And typing this reminds me that it's only a month away. Fuck.) We're attempting to do a McShep version of Imagine Me & You, a truly delightful movie that is perhaps the only mainstream lesbian romantic comedy ever. (With Lena Headey! And Piper Perabo, of Coyote Ugly, er, fame!)
ETA: IMO, Kissing Jessica Stein doesn't count as a mainstream lesbian rom com. One day, unless laziness prevents me, I will rewatch it, and compare/contrast these two to explain why.

Anyway, if anyone is up for beta-ing this when/if it's done please drop me a comment! We'd love more input, especially from someone who is familiar with SGA (and maybe the movie too).

2. [livejournal.com profile] moonilicious recently recommended the movie St. Trinian's, and I'm here to second it. For those who don't know (and I didn't), it's based of a series of drawings (and famous films from the 50s) about a rowdy, lovably chaotic British girls boarding school, run by an equally quirky headmistress, played by Rupert Everett in drag. If that wasn't enough of a carrot for you, Colin Firth is also in it, as the Minister of Education. And if that's still not enough, the two of them stare at each other a lot while violins swell offscreen.

Anyway, great girl characters, lots of hijinks/camp, and just generally fun. Get your hands on it if you can.

3. From [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore: In response to heat they're getting from the American Family Association, P&G is conducting a phone poll to see if people are for or against the Luke/Noah storyline on As The World Turns. Even if you don't watch the show, please consider taking a quick moment to support boy kissing and thwart homophobic bigotry. The poll is completely automated. You don't have to talk to anyone. And it really does take all of a second to register your opinion.

Just call 1-800-331-3774 and press #1 to continue in English (or #2 for Spanish), then 2 to get to the ATWT poll, then press 1 to continue the storyline.

Please spread the word if you're so inclined. The fight for good has never been so simple! :)

ETA: This might be different for callers outside the U.S., the jury still seems to be out. I just did it, and I had to press 2, then 1 instead of the other way around. Give it a try!

I have no fic to contribute...

only lame crappy photoshop. Picture stolen from Joe Mallozi's Blog. Sorry. )

Happy SGA Day! \o/ I'm home in DC for the premiere, which is exciting because I will a) get to watch it with Meg and b) get to watch it on TV tonight, because I don't have cable in New York.

Also, happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] miripanda!!
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (SGA John huh?)
Let me preface this by saying that hey, I love SGA and I want my show back and Joe Mallozi is the picspam god of fangirls everywhere, BUT. This quote is from Joe Mallozi's blog today, about why scifi is better than fantasy:

In other words, whereas scifi has to be more or less grounded in the types of developments a story can take, fantasy has the freedom to go anywhere the author chooses/imagines and, as a result, the developments in the plot may seem more convenient or strange than logical progressions.

AHAHAHAHA. Oh yeah, logical, like that gas that turned Wraith into humans? Suuuuure, Joe. *pats head*

Hey all. I've set up backup journals over on greatestjournal and insanejournal. Same user name. I plan on synching them with this journal. Feel free to friend me, though I've haven't gotten around to friending anyone on those accounts myself yet. < /lazy fucker>

Also: WIP Meme!

When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

OMG I have WIPs! I should be unemployed more often!

More of the HSM/SGA fic, the part where John and Rodney meet at homeroom. )

SGA/Bourne Identity Fusion. Someone else has to have written this before, right? )

And that's off to bed with me, since I have to catch an early bus to NYC. Really beginning to hate job interviews. Just employ me, already!

Still Pru's fault.

This is why Mere needs a job. )
merelyn: yes, that is panda from skins hugging a giant fluffy cupcake pillow. (SGA Facepalm)
Hey, I wrote fic! Or committed fic, more accurately.

Basically, Pru wanted SGA/High School Musical fic to cheer her up. And as a huge fan of both, how could I say no? I posted this in her blog, reposting it here for safekeeping:

The first thing I've written in years, and it's, er, a SGA/High School Musical fusion thing. And it's just a snippet. No promises on finishing/continuing it.

Title: Breaking Free (and let me tell you how excited I am to unironically title a fic that)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] merelyn
Rating: Right now, G
Summary: “What exactly is your plan here, Genius? Start dressing like a hipster and bag a cheerleader?”
Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] moonblade85 for looking over this. And for kicking my ass to make me write more.

This is the part where Rodney is Gabriella )

Massive recs set for [livejournal.com profile] lillianloop. WELCOME TO THE FANDOM!

Okay. So SGA has way too much good fic. Dammit, SGA. Hence this taking me forever to put together, because the sheer number of excellent fics that I've read over the past two years means that I can't even remember all of them. This is the best that I can scrape together. Count on me to be all "oh, wait I forgot this one!!!" on you a lot.

Here you go! Sorry it came out like a laundry list. I tried, rather feebly, to organize it. Let me know if any of the links don't work.

The Classics, and Other Uncategorized Fic )

The boys suck at relationships. Hard. )

Aliens Made Them Do It )

Slave fic, prostitution fic, etc. )

Genderfuck, WNGWJLEO, and other interesting commentary on gender and/or sexuality )

The AUs. Probably the biggest section, either because I'm an AU 'ho, or because SGA fandom is. )

The Crack fic is strong in this fandom. Oooh boy. )

Alternate realities, time travel, etc. )

Some Gen fics! )

Podfic )

Phew. Done. Enjoy, hun! Keep in mind that this is all personal taste, and what you should do when you're finished with all these (heh) is read all the SGA stuff by all the authors recced here. Because I had a hard time choosing, and I need to stop adding fic to this list before I drive myself bonkers.
