Just added some new friends off the McShep Friending Meme, and it inspired me to get off my lurking butt and use this journal for its intended purpose and post stuff. *waves at the new folks*

First, a very brief life update because, well, not much has happened. My job's going all right (I have health insurance now, say what, working for The Man!). It's (almost) nice and springy around here- and oh, how I miss the southern coast of Virginia right now, let me tell you. I've also been pretty busy lately hanging out with folks and watching American Idol in my PJs with my roommates.

Also, lots of people visiting me soon, like [livejournal.com profile] duckfish (I think??), [livejournal.com profile] corporatepiracy, and [livejournal.com profile] sovietkitsch, and my engaged friends from college whose wedding I will be in at the end of this year.

And, in more fannish related things:

1. Meg and I are co-writing something for the [livejournal.com profile] reel_sga challenge. (And typing this reminds me that it's only a month away. Fuck.) We're attempting to do a McShep version of Imagine Me & You, a truly delightful movie that is perhaps the only mainstream lesbian romantic comedy ever. (With Lena Headey! And Piper Perabo, of Coyote Ugly, er, fame!)
ETA: IMO, Kissing Jessica Stein doesn't count as a mainstream lesbian rom com. One day, unless laziness prevents me, I will rewatch it, and compare/contrast these two to explain why.

Anyway, if anyone is up for beta-ing this when/if it's done please drop me a comment! We'd love more input, especially from someone who is familiar with SGA (and maybe the movie too).

2. [livejournal.com profile] moonilicious recently recommended the movie St. Trinian's, and I'm here to second it. For those who don't know (and I didn't), it's based of a series of drawings (and famous films from the 50s) about a rowdy, lovably chaotic British girls boarding school, run by an equally quirky headmistress, played by Rupert Everett in drag. If that wasn't enough of a carrot for you, Colin Firth is also in it, as the Minister of Education. And if that's still not enough, the two of them stare at each other a lot while violins swell offscreen.

Anyway, great girl characters, lots of hijinks/camp, and just generally fun. Get your hands on it if you can.

3. From [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore: In response to heat they're getting from the American Family Association, P&G is conducting a phone poll to see if people are for or against the Luke/Noah storyline on As The World Turns. Even if you don't watch the show, please consider taking a quick moment to support boy kissing and thwart homophobic bigotry. The poll is completely automated. You don't have to talk to anyone. And it really does take all of a second to register your opinion.

Just call 1-800-331-3774 and press #1 to continue in English (or #2 for Spanish), then 2 to get to the ATWT poll, then press 1 to continue the storyline.

Please spread the word if you're so inclined. The fight for good has never been so simple! :)

ETA: This might be different for callers outside the U.S., the jury still seems to be out. I just did it, and I had to press 2, then 1 instead of the other way around. Give it a try!

Woah.

This is such an awesome site. I love it.

Just saw Kingdom of Heaven. It was actually not too bad. I was, I am almost ashamed to admit, impressed by Orlando Bloom. Heh. There's just no bottom to my bad taste. It keeps going and going...

Okay, I tottled off the post office today to mail [livejournal.com profile] wordweaver06 my copy of Wilby Wonderful, which I had agreed to do despite my deep abiding suspicions of what could possibly happen to it, mostly due the sketchiness of the U.S. Postal Service.

Anyway, I went to check my mailbox, and what had arrived but Falling Angels and Last Night from [livejournal.com profile] vamplover84, who is soooooo my new favorite person. (Thank you! Thank you! Eeee! I am going to have a CKR fest as soon as I can clear some time. Eeee again!)

Anyway, Wilby Wonderful left, Falling Angels and Last Night arrived. How nice. I could write something on giving and receiving, and the apparent web of CKR-love that embraces us all, but I won't. :)

These are some random thoughts on mine that came from reading a post in the journal of [livejournal.com profile] wordweaver06 about Ariel, the Little Mermaid, and common mermaid myths. The post said that Eric, the Prince in the movie, really doesn't have anything going for him other than his looks and his two legs. No personality.

And you know what, most other Disney princes are that same cardboard cut out. This, I think, is because the Disney writers (and the fairy tales they base their stories on) all focus on the girls. Think of it, the movies are called Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid. The male parts in these films are basically there for the girl to fall in love with and serve as a plot device. And no matter how much effort is give the Princess a personality and making her likable, having her fall in love with a good-looking piece of carboard does not endear any of them to me. It's always about the Disney Princesses, and never the Prince. Which bothers me, because I really like movies with well-developed male characters.
The only notable exceptions to this are Aladdin and The Lion King, which actually have guys as the main focus- guys with some sort of personality. With some character development!! (Of course Tarzan also has a male central figure, but I wouldn't call it notable.) Of course what happens here is that the Princess doesn't have as much personality, though certainly not the degree of the girl focused movies.

So the main problem we have here is that in a lot of Disney movies, the title character is far more developed than his/her romantic interest. Boo.

That's why Besuty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie. Because, as the title says, it's about both of them. They both have different, interesting character traits, even conflicting personalities, and best of all, they don't fall in love at first sight like everyone else. Yay!

There is also, of course, the fact that Beauty and the Beast has an adorably stuffy clock as a supporting character. Hehehe. I luff Cogsworth.

Okay, musings over. God, I feel so dorky I may have to go out and get me a pocket protector.

Going Away

First off, I think Chapter Four is finished. The more I write of this thing, the more I hate it, until I get a really good idea for something and then I like it again. I don't think I have the temperament to really handle being a writer though. I need to develop a skin.

Also, I went to dinner and a movie with Emily, Anna and Molly. We saw Bend It Like Beckham. My Thoughts. SPOILERS!! )

Thirdly, my dad stopped over during his lunch break. This is a very common occurrence by itself, but today he read me a poem. Apparently, he found it, and it spoke to him and he adapted it to fit his own situation.

It was all about how he dreaded September coming because Meg and I were leaving and he had to let us go and even when we came back we'd be different and it would never be the same. I hugged him and had to tuck my face into his shirt until I got my tears under control. Even now as I'm writing this I'm tearing up. I'm really going to miss my dad. I really am. He's one of the few people on the planet who I can talk to about anything and he makes me laugh all the time and I can tease him about being old and I don't know...I just love him. And I don't say that seriously about many people.

Anyway, the whole thing made me think of everything else I'm going to miss when I go away, and none of it is exactly what I thought would.

Christ. Now I'm depressed. I wonder what that emoticon looks like.
