Okay. So SGA has way too much good fic. Dammit, SGA. Hence this taking me forever to put together, because the sheer number of excellent fics that I've read over the past two years means that I can't even remember all of them. This is the best that I can scrape together. Count on me to be all "oh, wait I forgot this one!!!" on you a lot.

Here you go! Sorry it came out like a laundry list. I tried, rather feebly, to organize it. Let me know if any of the links don't work.

**The Classics, and other Uncategorized Fic**
These are the big must reads, and some shorter fic too. The ones I remember, anyway. I'm going to start with an

astolat fic, because she's one of the most well loved authors in the fandom- though she writes mostly SPN now. (Sadness.) Go to her website and really read all of her SGA fic. And then, when you have more free time, read everything else she's ever written. And then her published novels.

A Beautiful Lifetime Event by astolat

This one is the very first SGA fic I ever read, and I know I'm not the only person for whom that's true. It's a kidfic (which you should probably brace yourself for, if you're going to hang around here for very long), perhaps the Mother of All Kidfic in SGA. It starts with what has become a cliche in the fandom, a good old accident with alien technology. John and Rodney find themselves the parents of a girl. Of course, this leads to them getting together in the end, but the story isn't so much about that. It's about family. If I could only rec you two SGA fics, one of them would be this one.

Intersections by kaneko

This is a really good fic for someone just starting out in the fandom, considering it's set before the pilot. It's all about how John and Rodney have nothing in common at all. Right?

Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead by cesperanza

I've loved

cesperanza since my due South days, and she's written a lot of wonderful SGA fic (you can read it all here), but this one is, IMO, her best. It's set in the prior to the events in Season 2 ep The Intruder, the team is earthside for the first time since coming to Atlantis. Rodney is somewhat adrift, John is convinced that he's about to lose everything, and the SGC has booked them in adjoining hotel rooms. It has some of my favorite fanfic moments, and an ending that is the most John/Rodney romantic EVER.

Great take on John.

cesperanza gives great weird, crazy John.

Transcendental by astolat

This is an old classic, especially in terms of Rodney's characterization. When Elizabeth is injured, the leadership of Atlantis falls to the next person in line, Rodney McKay. Rodney would make a terrible leader, you're thinking? Well, yes. But maybe not.

Time in a Bottle by astolat

So what if John and Rodney were stuck together alone in a Virtual Reality, together forever in the worst way possible? The way

astolat shows us how John and Rodney deal with the prospect of eternity is fascinating.

About A Lamp by torch

Those wacky ancients. Yet another story with weird ancient tech, with a great use of an unreliable narrator. Definite classic.

Down To You by mousewitchy

Written before McKay and Mrs. Miller, this features a kick ass Jeannie who hasn't heard from her brother in over a year, and she has no idea where he is or what he's doing. She decides to do something about it.

Thicker Than Water by julad

One of those John and Rodney go back to earth and visit Jeannie and her boys. Another John/Rodney story that's really about family.

A Better Fate by mmmchelle

Another John and Rodney earthside fic, only this time with John's parents.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (give or take) by merryish

John and Rodney steal a jumper and take it underwater. Things go wrong, as things tend to do for these boys. This one is an old classic, that actually was actually Kripke'd by the amazing season 2 episode, Grace Under Pressure. Of course, that one didn't have gay sex. So this might win.

Exigencies by rivier

I adore this story. It's so skillfully done. It's a great outside POV perspective, and features and extremely badass, Black Ops!John. I wish there was more fic that featured

Scenes From a Lesser War by amireal

Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT) is a common topic in military based fandoms, very popular in SGA. This is one of the best takes on it.

Care In The Holding by laceymcbain

John teaches Rodney how to shoot a gun.

Lost in Waiting by laceymcbain

John's a virgin. They said this fic couldn't be written.

laceymcbain proved them all wrong. This isn't exactly how I see the boys in canon, but

laceymcbain sold me on it. I love this fic.

Existence As Interesting As Possible by wax_jism

John and Rodney almost get eaten by a dragon, and then they're trapped on a planet. But it's more interesting than that, I promise.

Face Value by minnow1212

Rodney gets telepathy.

minnow1212 makes this more than just a cliche, and the way she writes all of the Atlantis characters is great.

Fix by crysothemis

Um, I actually haven't read this yet. I'm such a bad reccer. But it looks really amazingly structured, and everyone says it's good, so read and tell me what you think, eh?

We All Arrive By Different Streets by thegrrrl2002

It starts out, like so many stories, with John being drugged off his ass on an alien planet. Drugged and horny.

Eight Ways John and Rodney Gave Themselves Away by trinityofone

Okay, not exactly a classic, but one of my favorites. This is a really nice, short outsider POV piece on John and Rodney's relationship. This packs a lot in, so that you come to appreciate every character that

trinityofone uses as a lens to view John and Rodney.

Teacher's Pet by seperis and svmadelyn (WIP)

This one started out as with a classic crackfic premise- John is de-aged back to a little boy by some crazy aliens for a few months to learn a lesson. But it turned into something far more serious. This has a lot of amazing things to say about John Sheppard. It will break your heart.

Things You Never Did by godofwine

A really awesome death fic that gutted my heart out with a spoon. I love what this says about John, and also the way it builds John and Rodney's relationship. She's flocked it now, but I dug it up off the Way Back Machine. Probably rude of me, but it's only because I love this one and have a compulsion to pimp it out to others.

Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose by synecdochic

I saved this one for last in this category, because this is a story that is way more powerful when you are already immersed in SGA, know and love the characters, and are at least somewhat familiar with what happened in season 2. This is also the other fic on my "If I could only rec 2 SGA fics ever" list. It's amazing. Fic of the Year, seriously. It's still fanfiction, but it comes closer to transcending those limitations than anything I've read since. I don't want to hype it up for you too much, so let's just say: read it.

**They're such GUYS, or the next six are all about how John and Rodney have the most emotionally constipated but AWeSOME relationship ever**
The boys have the interpersonal skills of 2 year olds. They're also emotionally retarded. Let the fun begin!

Close Only Counts in Horseshoes and Hand Grenades by smittywing

I adore this one. Because one of those fuck buddies become something more fics, but it's so much more than that. Basically, John and Rodney have sex. But it doesn't count.

Your Inevitable Unhappy Ending by helenish

helenish's writing might take a while to get used to. It's very spare- it reminds me a lot of Hemingway, and I mean that as a complement. I love her stuff, it's very different, and her characterization of John in particular is always great. (She also wrote the very first Ron/Draco fic I ever read, yeeeeeears ago. Weird, huh?) Anyway, this is my favorite of her SGA fics.

Streets in a World Underneath It All by ismenetruth

This fic is incredibly cute, and it gives me a John/Rodney long term relationship that I buy 100%. Because it would take exactly this scenario for either one of them to admit their feelings for each other.

How Not To Make A Light Bulb by blinkiesays

This one is incredibly cool. and incorporates a lot of Season 1 stuff into their relationship.

Another beloved trope in the fandom.

Hold Hands and Try to Look Sincere by minveracat

An excellent introduction to this type of fic. Warm and funny, and slightly cracked out, as all aliens made them do it fic should be.

Proof By Contradiction by astolat

I fell bad reccing more

astolat fic, but she's amazing. Basically, whacky ancient tech makes them do it. And Rodney doesn't seem to care. Which makes emo John sad.

Abstain by resonant8

This one is a great take on it: Aliens Make Them Not Do It. I love the slow build up of tension, here.

Once More, With Feeling by misspamela

Aliens make John and Ford do it. This drives Rodney a little nuts. Hilarity ensues.

Referencing Gilbert Ryle by mz_bstone

One of those fics that sort of ended up being Kripke'd by the Season 2 episode The Long Goodbye. John and Rodney are possessed by the spirits of two long dead aliens. A fandom classic.

Diplomatic Incident by z_rayne

John makes the aliens do it, for a change. Love this one!

No Good Very Bad Aliens Made Them Do It by whetherwoman

The alien cliches keep making John and Rodney fuck. It doesn't go well.

That Pon Farr Thing by

John (or Rodney) makes a pretty, pretty rentboy/slave/sex slave. Some people have issues with this trope, but it doesn't bother me. *has no lines, not at all*

In the spirit of fairness, this one has Rodney induced to please John.

John and Rodney pimp themselves out for a ZPM. This one is long, plotty, and gorgeous. One of my favorites.

How to Succeed in Sex Slavery Without Really Trying by astolat

A fun, light riff. Short and sweet.

Rentboy AU by shusu

In this universe, John's a rentboy, Elizabeth is his pimp, and Rodney's his millionaire lover. Very porny, very enjoyable.

In The City of Seven Walls by auburnnothenna
Lucky for you, this monster epic (170,000 words +) was just completed. It's an utterly brilliant, searing psychological portrait of a John and Rodney who are captured and sold into slavery. Takes a while to read, but it's worth it.

**Genderfuck, WNGWJLEO, and other interesting commentary on gender and/or sexuality**
The fandom has produced an awful lot of good fic along these lines.

always should be someone you really love by thingswithwings

John and Rodney get turned into girls. Like any red-blooded American (or Canadian) males, they immediately see the opportunity for making their own hot girl on girl action. But then things get...complicated.

Straight as a Circle by toomuchplor

Okay, I'm sure you remember all those So-And-So Woke Up Gay! fics. This is a brilliant twist on that premise, because, as the author herself says: John Sheppard wakes up straight. No, really, that's pretty much it. One day, about two months ago, I thought, "John Sheppard is *so gay* that he couldn't be in a 'woke up gay' story. He'd have to wake up straight instead." Love this one.

Second Skin and its sequel, Skintight by toft_froggy

John has a secret. Rodney finds out. This is the infamous transvestite!John fic.

toft_froggy makes this completely plausible. The first one is great, the second one more romantic, and I love them both.

Human Vacillation by trinityofone

Really clever, very interesting premise.

Only Grumpier and With Darker Hair by scribblinlenore

When some crazy aliens turn Rodney into a woman, he decides he needs to take his new body for a test drive, if you catch my drift. But then things get weird.

He's Having Her Baby! and its strangely sweet and more serious sequel He's Having His Baby! by rageprufrock

Rodney, in a fit of crazy, gets it into his head that Chaya (evil alien priestess from Sanctuary) knocked up John. John fails, fails, fails to persuade him otherwise. Pru's writing is always a lot of fun, and with a surprising amount of tenderness.

Stand-In by lamardeuse

A The Return, Part 1 earthside fic where John picks up a girl in a bar. She's blunt, and unusual, and a scifi geek. Things are going great, until John realizes why he's attracted to her. And then things get even more interesting.

Ardhanarishvana by auburnnotlisa (aka auburnothenna and monanotlisa)

This one is a WIP, yes, but any genderfuck rec list would be incomplete without it. It's basically a genderfuck team schmorgasbord, with multiple pairings. Very epic. Very good. And hopefully it will be finished soon.

**AUs**
Back in early days, there weren't that many AUs in the fandom, but now it seems like they make up at least a third of all decent fic. Basically, any movie/scenario/random profession you can think of? Someone somewhere has written a McShep AU for it. I'm an AU whore, so luckily this makes me very happy. Also, SGA went through a brief Harlequin romance phase that's never completely died off, so the line between AU and crack!fic is a little blurry sometimes.

Hindsight by rageprufrock

I could be wrong, but I think this is one of the first AUs in SGA fandom. John's an FBI agent, and Rodney still works for the SGC in Colorado.

Bellcurve, or Ladies Night at the Boom Boom Room by rageprufrock

Classic AU in the fandom, with a whole bunch of sequels you can find on Pru's website. Rodney's a physics professor, and he goes into a male strip club in order to secure a date for a wedding. But he gets distracted by...guess who?

The Best Things in Life Are Free by smittywing

The best High School AU out there. Based on that oh so awesome 80s movie with Patrick Dempsey Can't Buy Me Love. John's the popular boy, and Rodney's a geek who pays John to be his friend and make him cool.

Second Time by lamardeuse

Another good High School take on the boys. One of my favorite stories by

lamardeuse, I come back to this fic often.

Hands On Science by nindulgence

Incredibly cute story with John and Rodney meeting on class field trips to the science museum.

Under the Sea by astolat

Okay, I had to throw this in here, because it's cracked out and based on a badfic cliche challenge- and cracked out, badfic cliches are what drives SGA fandom. A college AU where John and Rodney meet at a frat party. Oh, and there's drag. 'Nuff said.

How To Have A Relationship Without Even Trying by ladycat777

John and Rodney are college roommates. Based on that porn cliche where one roommate's gay, one's straight, and porny hijinks ensue. Hilarious, this one.

Campfire Law by notpoetry

John and Rodney are camp counselors. I don't think I need to say anything more.

DADT, Damyata, Dayadhvam by trinityofone

A fascinating political AU set in a universe where the military finds a new way to enforce Don't Ask, Don't Tell. By turns chilling, insightful, and ultimately moving, this is one of my favorite Trin fics.

Unidentified by fiercelydreamed

Heartwrenching contemporary AU with the added bonus of amnesia. Brilliant. I love this one.

Counterpoint by nestra

I don't know if you've picked up on this yet, but according to SG-1 canon where Rodney was introduced as a character, he used to play the piano, until his teacher told him he had no soul for it. So there's a lot of AUs that place Rodney back in the world of music. In this one Rodney's a music composer, and John's kind of a drifter.

String Theory by toft_froggy

Wonderful AU where John is a slightly damaged violinist and Rodney is a slightly damaged brilliant composer. I want to draw big sparkly hearts around this story.

A Farm in Iowa by sheafrotherdon

John moves into his grandfather's farm after leaving the military. Rodney's car happens to break down near by. And so begins one of the richest and most beloved AU 'verses in the fandom. It turns into a kidfic, btw. All I can say is read it, read it, read it.

The Nantucket AU by dogeared, aesc, and sheafrotherdon

This is more of a universe than just one story. Basically it's John and Rodney and the beach. Beautiful little series, and people keep adding more and fleshing it out.

A Supermarket in California by taffetablue

Rodney's a professor at UC Berkley, and John owns a, yep, you guessed it, a corner supermarket. John's wooing of Rodney in this is utterly charming.

Walk This Way by yin_again

Yin writes the best AUs. She's incredibly prolific with them too. I recommend checking them all out on her website. She's also written sequel snippets for most of them, including this one, and the one below.

John becomes Rodney's cat walker. Just go with it. It's great.

Clean Plate Club by yin_again

In this one John is a photographer and Rodney is a chef/food designer for photo shoots. It doesn't seem like this would work at all, but trust me,

yin_again pulls it off beautifully.

Complementary Colors by yin_again

Rodney's a painter, John becomes his model/muse. The level of detail in this is amazing. It feels really well researched and lived in.

Missed the Saturday Dance by zoetrope

This isn't so much a fic, as a multimedia fan experience. It's a 1940s AU that has the most amazing presentation.

The Road To Nevada by lamardeuse

A stargate world set in the 1940s.

lamardeuse loves this time period and this is one of her longer, and best SGA fics.

Small Primes and Square Roots by liviapenn

Featuring my favorite kid in any kidfic AU, this one has a heartbreaking John as well as the dorkiest/most amazing proposition at the end of almost any McShep fic.

Heat by svendra

This one reminds me rather strongly of Romancing the Stone. One of

svendra's best.

Fireball by celli

An amazing NASCAR AU. You don't have to like NASCAR, or know anything about it. (Hell, if you've seen Ricky Bobby, you're more than set here.)

Junk Cheap by devildoll

Rodney moves into a building with a Junk Shop below, run by the most irritating slacker Rodney has ever met.

biggest ever sky by halowrites and lilysaid

A circus AU! I love, love, love this one. It's gorgeous, lyrical, and everyone is perfectly cast.

Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot by out_there

The John is a dance instructor AU. Takes what could be a cliche Harlequin premise and does some interesting and insightful things with it, particularly in the area of Rodney's characterization.

Take Clothes Off As Directed by helenish

In order for this to make sense, you need to be familiar with two other stories: General and Dr. Sheppard and Coming Home by

xanthelj. They're an epic series, extremely kinky and porny, set in this alternate world where everyone is divided along dominant/submissive lines. Personally, I think the stories are hot, but it's one of those things where you kind of have to ignore characterization and lots of other stuff for the sake of the porn. These stories were the subject of much discussion in the fandom, and

helenish wrote this story as a response, with a much more serious consideration of John's characterization and the implications of the world that

xanthelj created. Highly recommended.

Bagglevarger's Theory of Inversive Magic by skoosiepants
I'm sure you'll enjoy this one- it's a SGA/Harry Potter fusion. The way

skoosiepants blends these 'verses is amazing, and even though I was a little dissatisfied by the ending, it's still a must read.

The Dark Side by astolat

A brilliant, brilliant SGA/Star Wars fusion with a surprising, but perfectly insightful take on Rodney as a Jedi and John as a not-quite-evil Sith. One of my all time favorites.

Entanglement by linaerys

A really gripping take on the Hitchcock movie Notorious for the the

reel_sga challenge.

Tomorrow Might Be a Good Day by khohen1

An SGA version of The Philadelphia Story. Had to throw it in here, because I love, love, love The Philadelphia Story.

Truth, Justice and Rodney McKay by siriaeve (and it's two sequels)

The SGA/Superman fusion. How could you possibly resist Rodney as Lois Lane?

Idol by trinityofone

An SGA take on Entourage, where John is a famous movie star and Rodney his acerbic, brilliant agent. I really love this one, particularly because it has some very smart things to say about Joe Flanigan's somewhat debatable acting skillz, as well as fandom as an extension of our society's culture of celebrity. Also, I love what she does with John and Rodney's relationship.

Unconventional Beauty by jane_elliot

Because every fandom needs a Beauty and the Beast AU. This one is long, plotty, and really well developed.

No Myth by skoosiepants

An SGA version of Sleeping Beauty. Words cannot express my love for this story. It's delightful, in every sense of the word.

An Old Story by aesc

And SGA take on the myth of Cupid and Psyche, which happens to be my favorite myth of all time. The way

aesc fashions Rodney as Psyche is pretty damn hilarious.

No Refunds Or Exchanges by astolat

This one takes some classic Harlequin cliches- mail order husband! marriage of convenience!- and brilliantly weaves them into an alternate Season One story line.

astolat's characterization of John and Rodney is dead on. This one is so much fun.

The Spare by wickedwords

A lovely Harlequin AU: Elizabeth said, "It is your duty to the empire to marry Rodney McKay."

101 Ways To Get Lucky (In Love) by scribblinlenore

Another charming Harlequin AU, where Rodney hires John to give him relationship advice. (I know, "John" and "relationship advice" should probably never be in the same sentence, but trust me, it works.)

gpfg_studios- A community that hosts numerous fics based on a AU crack universe where the boys are all pornstars working for a company that produces Gay Porn For Girls. It's got a lot of interesting meta stuff. But mostly porn. Literally. You should just read every story ever posted, basically.

John, Rodney, Ronon and Teyla are a rock band. Darkish, and fascinating, Trin sold me totally on this. Even though some people don't quite see the John characterization here, I buy it. (I also have the album, I can send it to you if you want.)

After the Other, Later Still and Not Built in a Day by siriaeve

John and Rodney are academics. And they're Irish. And John wears glasses.

siriaeve does a great job of capturing the rich environment of Dublin and Trinity college, a major reason why this series is far more than the shameless indulgence she claims it to be.

**Crack!fic**
SGA fandom has a tendency to be...kind loopy. In an completely mad, wonderful sort of way.

Mating Rituals by Karen McFadyyon

Animal transformation fic has been pretty popular, and this fic (well this fic and the one that inspired it, ) set the precedent. John and Rodney are penguins. It's amazing. It's also not online any more. ETA: Karen McFaddyon has asked that they not be distributed anymore, and sendspace took it down (?weird, not sure why?) so if you haven't read it yet, um, ~~email me~~ too bad.

The Wheel, Atlantis, Wars, and So On by cesperanza

So Rodney gets turned into a dolphin, and things go from there. This fic makes me want to make high pitched dolphin squeals of joy.

The Checkmate 'Verse by beadattitude

An ongoing 'verse where John is a cat. Sooooo cute.

So John's a sunflower and Rodney's a tulip. And damn, I know you're thinking WTF? right now, but's it's so cute. SGA fandom has ruined me for normal, sane fic.

There's a popular conception of Atlantis as an Island of Misfit Toys (go team 'tard!), where they send all the screw ups and social rejects.

svendra nails it.

The Roads Never Lead Where They're Supposed To by eleveninches

eleveninches writes the most brilliantly cracked out random fic. This is probably her best in that regard. It's based off a crappy B movie horror film, and goes from there. You'll probably love all her stuff.

Them Other Boys Don't Know How to Act by eleveninches

A tag to the season 3 episode Irresistible, that actually canonically featured a slave/sex potion. (See, the crack does not come from a vacuum, my friend.) So funny, even more so if you snag

pounceflower's hysterical podfic reading of it.

**Alternate Realities/Timetravel**
Alternate realities are canon in the Stargate worlds, and there are lots of fic that introduce alternate Johns and Rodneys. Some include MENSA 'verse stuff, which is the name for the AR based on the episode McKay and Mrs. Miller, where were introduced to an alternate "Rod" McKay, who actually had social skills and manners and was kinda creepy, in the end. That was also the episode where we learned that Rodney's real name is Meredith Rodney McKay. (I practically had a seizure of awesomeness when I found out, let me tell you, because Rodney. Has. My. Name.) You might not want to check out the MENSA and Road Not Taken fics until after you're a little more familiar with those episodes.

Chaos Theory by amireal

This one gives us an alternate John and Rodney where Rodney's in the military and John's a scientist. This is awesome, not the least because John. Wears. Glasses. Very cool premise, and executed with all of

amireal's skill and polish.

I adore this one. It's based on the premise that there is an alternate timeline where Rodney is Meredith. As in a girl. It's a brilliant take on how the McKay/Sheppard relationship would play out if it was a het relationship that could actually be text instead of subtext. (I kind of wish this version of the show existed, actually.)

The Principle of Exclusion by seperis

A long and plotty MENSA fic. She really develops the relationship between John and Rod beautifully. A must read in this genre.

Major Redesign by shusu

This is set in the AR presented in the SG-1 episode The Road Not Taken, a dark bizarro universe that's vaguely 1984ish. Sam from our universe stumbles into this world, inadvertantly killing her AR counterpart, who was the ex-wife of AR Rodney, who's a billionaire computer genius and incidentally wears glasses. This fic gives us a wonderful AR John, who has the most amazingly apt profession, considering he canonically uses phrases like "flatware" and has the gayest sparkly curtains in his room ever.

Ah, gen. I read little of it, to tell you the truth, but all of these are amazing. Highly recommended.

I think SGA as a fandom has really taken this idea and run with it. It's fanfic on tape, for you to put on your ipod and smirk to yourself over on long subway rides.
