BIG. GIANT. HEART. I love the way, just like Echoes, this episode took what could be a silly, fun, cracked out premise (Rodney + Superpowers = HILARITY)- and for a while I was afraid Rodney was going to go all power mad and take over the city, and that would have been painful- but instead they took it in a serious, earnest direction that managed to emotionally gut me. Because as soon as it became apparent that Rodney was going to visit everyone and make his peace with them, my heart went all clenchy/swoony and pretty much stayed that way until the end.
This episode was like Rodney's message to Jeannie in Letters From Pegasus only with EVERYONE and we got to watch Rodney awkwardly do/say something incredibly thoughtful, and then run away, OVER AND OVER AGAIN. There is something so arresting about Rodney when he's at the end of his rope. You're never sure, when it comes down to it, if he's going to be manic and hysterical, or the vulnerable, decent human being we all know is under there. (Usually is a combination of both.) The point is this: vunerable, decent Rodney who cares so much but can't show it for crap is one of the most heartbreaking and heartwarming things ever.
Radek: I adored the way he, as soon as he figured out what was coming- tried to keep Rodney from saying it. Even more so, I loved that he was completely gobsmacked at the end anyway. Because of course he does know that Rodney respects him and that his bluster doesn't mean anything, but to actually hear it, especially since the fact that Rodney is telling him at all means that Rodney is probably going to die... Oh my heart.
Teyla: OMG Rodney actually went and talked to Halling to find some last gesture thing he could do for her. This kills me. And learned how to serve tea! And Teyla's dead father! And the expression on her face. OMG DED.
Ronon: I love them together, really I do, and I love that, especially this season, Ronon has been a hugging machine in the world of the emotionally stunted ones. That said, I loved the furtive hug, and when Rodney fumbled that he'd healed the scars and ran away I totally teared up for the third time.
Elizabeth: He believes in her! And he wants everyone else to as well, which of course, because he's Rodney, means a 500 page treatise and a tangential invasion of her privacy. What I loved most about this is that Elizabeth really needed to hear that from someone. And Rodney knew. Also, the Rodney/Elizabeth scenes were fabulous in general. I like them together, and I like that she calls him on his emotional crap but only because she cares.
Carson: Oh Carson. You drive me nuts a lot, but I really like that you have a relationship with Rodney, but it's nice that Rodney has friends. And I liked that a "thank you" was more than enough to say what Rodney meant,
John: I love that John was completely in denial and emotionally constipated about all of it all the way to the end ("The way a friend loves another friend" AHHAHA. Oh, John, The fact that you said that doesn't make it less gay AT ALL.) Loved the little flashes we saw that he was really upset over the over the whole thing. Also, I loved that Rodney had to have a seizure in the middle of their heart to heart in order to get them out of it. My laptop will have to explode before they ever have that conversation.
Most of all: THEY LOVE HIM. EVERYONE LOVES EVERYONE. I LOVE THIS SHOW.
