SGA Recs: The John and Rodney Fail At Dating Edition
This pair of John and Rodney recs have a subject that's near and dear to my heart. Because yes, it's entirely possible that they have- combined!- the emotional maturity of a 12 year old boy who still hasn't figured out the difference between flirting and teasing a girl until she cries. Communication skills? Ha. Considerate? No. Thoughtful? Not so much. Okay, sure, John would remember to get you a present on your birthday, but if you wanted him to explicitly admit that he cares about you, you'd have wait three years and possibly hold him at gunpoint (or, if you're a certain person, bribe him with shiny advanced weaponry instead, with much better results). As for Rodney, he'd either blurt it out way too early, or insult you, or totally ignore you in favor of his latest project du jour- actually, probably all three at at once.

sheafrotherdon- This one is short but heartbreakingly true. I love her John to bits, because he can't help it, not really.
The "If You Want to Hold Your Breath For A Grand Romantic Gesture From Rodney McKay, Expect Asphixiation In Your Near Future" Fic:

toft_froggy- This one has a nifty timeline that works well, and also shows off Rodney's weird combination of vunerable asshole to perfection.
And in summation, The "These Boys Suck, But Damn If They Don't Suck Together" Fic:
On the Personification of Cell Phones and Government Entities by
finntasmic- This little gem from newcomer
finntasmic takes that oh so famous phone call from The Return, Part 1 and perfectly (and hilariously) fleshes out the landscape surrounding it. We see Rodney's blatant and unsubtle attempts at emotional manipulation. We see John's smirking reticence in response. But we know, really, that both of them are speaking a common language where hanging up the phone on your best friend means something far more than a girl just going by He's Just Not That Into You would ever believe.
And that's the point of this recs set: They get each other, kids. Their issues are all complementary. They have a snarky lobster thing going on. It's fucking cute.
