merelynSo....long time no post, eh flist? I haven't had too much fandom energy lately, but I heart you all and I'm trying to delurk a bit.
Basically, it's been an awful long time since I wasn't in a big active fandom. Apparently, when this happens, I just start reading and watching INCREDIBLY RANDOM CRAP FROM SHOWS I DON'T WATCH AND FANDOMS I'M NOT IN. CONSIDER THIS THE FIRST RANDOM POST OF MANY:
I wasn't exactly expecting it to be amazing, but Clea Duvall and Jensen with a Mohawk go a long way.
The srs thinky thoughts: I found it frustrating, because it had the potential to make some interesting points about women and the way that societal standards of beauty cripple those who fit the stereotypical ideal and those who don't in equally valid ways. I did like the way it tried to avoid the 'bitchy pretty one' and 'pretty-on-the-inside geek girl' dichotomy. But then it totally pulled a reverse-Grease at the end, and as much as I loved Jensen's Banana Republic makeover it felt like it completely undercut everything it had been trying to say about superficiality. I dunno. CLEARLY THINKING TOO HARD ABOUT A MOVIE WITH A TITLE LIKE TEN INCH "HERO".
The loltastic parts of the movie:
1. Romantic reveal via the guy dressing up as a homeless man. No seriously. W.T.F. What was that supposed to prove? Still confused.
2. The sparkling dialogue, my favorite line being when Piper jumped up and screamed "You mean she's NOT MY BABY!?!?!" Awesome.
3. Best of all, the completely unnecessary naked horse-riding beach commitment ceremony thing at the end. Why. No, really, why.
The unironically awesome parts:
Jensen's Mohawk! The tampon shopping!
Clea Duvall! I have loved you since But I'm A Cheerleader! And Can't Hardly Wait! And hell, even The Faculty! Make better movies please!
Mostly: DANNEEL OMG HOW SO AWESOME? I'd never seen her in anything before, but color me smitten. Girl's just adorable.
The gist: Overall, it definitely had cute moments, was nicely female-centric, but suffered from 'quirky indie movie ensemble of characters' disease. It also kind of left a 'community theatre' taste in my mouth. /snob
Still, ascirca_eve points out, "And it's still better than Christmas Cottage!"
