merelyn1. Where is the Virgin!Merlin fic??? WHERE? Fandom, you’re letting me down.
2. The Unicorn’s bad weave made me laugh so much.
3. I like how Gwen had no lines really, she just pumped water or sand into a bucket as needed to advance the plot. And Morgana just looked concerned in her fur thing and then had to eat rat stew for the lulz. (Dear show: Next week do better with the girls, kthx.)
4. Speaking of that, the rat stew! The beetles! I am easily grossed out, but SUCH AN UNNECESSARY ADDITION TO THE EPISODE. And yet hilarious, especially Gaius’ face. I think Richard Wilson was having a grand time right there. (Sometime I need to talk about the awesomeness of RW’s blue doo-rag and insistence on wearing his glasses over his hair, but this is not the post for it.)
5. Merlin and the hand signals business was TOTALLY A RIP OFF of the SGA episode Coup D’Etat, with Rodney and his spinny finger gesture of total lameness.
(6. On that note, who wants to write the Merlin/SGA fusion fic where Uther is the Military commander of Atlantis and Merlin’s a botanist or something with the BEST ANCIENT GENE EVER and Arthur is a prat of a pilot in the RAF, and the two of them plus Gwen and Morgana (who should be all Cadman-y and blow stuff up) are a ridiculously awesome gate team?
Right. Just me then.)
7. This was such an interesting episode for Arthur. On the one hand, such a jerk (his banter with Merlin definitely had more of an edge than usual IMO). On the other hand, he’s trying so hard to do the right thing! And he has clearly-highlighted-and-underlined-several-times daddy issues. Oh, Arthur.
8. Drinking the poison aside, the most affecting moment in the whole episode for me was Merlin’s anguished “I’m meant to protect him!” (might not be an exact quote, as I am posting from work like the model employee I am). I just- ah. It got me right here. It also made me have a lot of thinky thoughts about how KEEP ARTHUR FROM BEING KILLED AND BELIEVE IN HIM AND ALSO MAKE SURE HE EATS has maybe become Merlin’s #1 priority in life? And yeah, it’s cute and destiny blah blah blah, but it’s also a little co-dependent and probably not healthy.
Obviously Arthur cares for Merlin as well, I’m not suggesting otherwise. It’s just a little strange the way it’s set up that Merlin is the hero of the show, but then a lot of times it feels like his role is mostly to be the accessory to Arthur’s own coming of age story. (Not all the time, mind you; but even last week’s episode, where the storyline was designed to reveal more of Merlin’s home life and whatnot there were an awful lot of moments where it was All About Arthur.)
It makes me want a lot of future fic where Merlin comes into his own as a badass warlock and their power dynamic shifts to something a little more equal-like.
9. A lot of people have labeled this episode decent filler, but I actually really liked it a lot. It was one of those strange ones that reminded me oddly of a Simpson’s episode- where you start with one event and then the narrative goes from A to B to C straight to R and you have no idea how it happened but it works. I in no way would have thought that killing a unicorn would end up with Arthur in a maze and then drinking liquid Ambien on a beach.
10. I AM NOT SPOILED FOR NEXT WEEK, BUT OMGWTF IT LOOKS EPIC.

*snerk* But your point is well-taken, and I hope we get to see Merlin develop a bit more as well. He is certainly meant to be the moral center of the show, in a lot of ways, but that doesn't mean he can't have some interesting missteps during his coming of age. I think we may get a lot of that when Arthur finds out about his magic, because as much as Arthur will have to grow to accept him, Merlin will have to grow to trust him.

I am hopeful that we'll see more of Merlin being awesome and getting tested and whatnot. To be fair, there's a lot going on that the show has set up- not just Arthur's story, but Morgana's and (sort of) Gwen's as well. I can't wait to see how all of it plays out.

Date: 2008-12-01 05:01 pm (UTC)I loved the rat stew scene myself, although possibly that was just because Arthur was touching Merlin's hand and guiding it to his mouth and being all 'Do you want... some more?' in that teasing-omg-so-very-suggestive tone of voice. Depth, I do not has it.
I think the co-dependency thing is probably because Merlin's destiny has been quite clearly outlined as 'protecting Arthur and helping him be the awesome king he needs to be' rather than 'becoming an awesome badass warlock in his own right and protecting Camelot/Albion/whatever'. The latter is part of his destiny, but it seems to have been marginalised somewhat thus far in favour of the Merlin/Arthur relationship development (ie epic gay destiny syndrome)

Merlin's destiny has been oppressed by the gay- and not that I'm not complaining that much!- but it would be nice to see him develop on his own as well.

Merlin ground his teeth together, closed his eyes and breathed deeply before he replied as calmly as he could, "These plants are very fragile and need special care."
"Special care?" The words dripped with sarcasm and innunendo.
Merlin looked up and directly at Wing Commander Arthur Pendragon, practically murdering him with his glare. The fact that he found Arthur's dishevelled blond hair and slight pout ridiculously cute was totally beside the point. And he was absolutely not noticing the lean muscles while the Commander was leaning against a tree. Nope, not at all.
Arthur seemed to be amused by Merlin's attempt to glare at him and a smirk replaced the pout. Merlin rolled his eyes and went back to his plants.
"You're no fun!" Now the pout was practically audible. Honestly, Arthur was such a child!
"Hush," Merlin quieted him and extracted the sample he'd tried to pick for the better part of an hour now. And his inattention had nothing whatsoever to do with Arthur Pendragon, constant thorn in Merlin's side and his wet drea...-no-we-are-not-going-there-Merlin-nope-never-NO.
Okay, so he might have a small crush on Arthur. So what? It didn't erase the fact that Arthur was a prat.
"Sir, if we dont get back to the gate in 10 minutes we will miss check in." Merlin breathed a sigh of relief when Lieutenant Morgana Le Fey drew Arthur's attention from him. Maybe he could actually get his work done now.
His hope was short lived when he heard Arthur drawl, "Well, it all depends on the Doc here. How long do you reckon will you need to get this done?"
Merlin very nearly growled. "It would go a lot faster if someone would let me work in peace!" He glared once more at Arthur who just smirked wider than before.
Merlin sighed again and shook his head. No matter how many interesting, yet undiscovered plants he might find in the Pegasus Galaxy which could help cure cancer or help defeat world hunger - he wasn't quite sure if it was worth being harrassed and smirked at by a bored Wing Commander of the RAF all day long.
Then again, he thought when he caught a glimpse of Arthur's delectable ass in his standard BDUs, some things might be worth staying around for.
