dS Recs for Molly
Mar. 1st, 2005 03:01 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Okay, Molly. Brace yourself. Because for an older TV show that barely any normal people remember from when it was on the air, dS is big; it has an indecent amount of freakishly good writers. I kind of went for quantity, so for some I didn't have time to write a decent blurb. Just trust me that they're all good.
Okay, first off, the
crack_van.
The crack_van Fandom Overview in case you haven't read it yet.
Memoried list of crack_van recs. Lots of really good stuff here.
ds_flashfiction is still an active community with a lot of excellent writers. The memories are well worth going through.
ds_noticeboard- for all your fandom news, and fic announcements.
H'okay. Now for individual recs.
Speranza
Her Site
She's pretty much the BNF of due South. Prolific, and friggin' brilliant. My recommendation is to read everything she's ever written in any fandom ever.
...fine. If you're looking for specific stories, here are some particularly good ones.
Eight Sessions- Fraser and Ray in therapy. It's angsty but gripping; the characterization is phenomenal.
Juggling Act- This one really goes along with the wacky magical realism feel of the show. Oh, and it has Ray the Angry Clown. So funny.
The Killer Replacements- Again, this will probably be funnier if you have a hold of the whole acknowledged ridiculousness RayV undercover, RayK replacement thing. Maybe a better one for after you've just watched "Burning Down the House".
Ping!- I love this one.
Scrabble- Really cool format. Awesome story.
With Six You Get Eggroll- Speranza mixes up all the crazy endings the characters get in CoTW. So RayV and Stella go off on an adventure, and RayK and Fraser, well, they end up with six kids. Yep. Six. And yeah, it's a kidfic, but it's a great one.
Kowalski is Bleeding- Again, one you should probably save for later. It's gripping. It's flawed- one reunion scene short of perfect, but one of the greatest examples of 3rd person PoV showing not telling ever.
This is getting ridiculous (seriously, just read everything by Speranza) but here are two of my favorites:
Believe You Me- Really short, but wonderful. I'm reccing it this month.
And...my all time favorite due South story EVER... Chicago's Most Wanted- This fic is brilliant. It reads like an episode of the show at it's very best, with the added bonus of gay pr0n. Seriously, it's breezy, funny, hot. If I could write something like this, I think my life would be complete.
Okay, moving on to other things.
Shorter Fics, to Get You Started
Refraction by Shrift- Refracting is such an awesome word. Tehehe.
Indelible by C.J. Finn- Based on the Champion spark plug logo CKR has tatooed on his arm. Hot.
Unplanned by Beth H.- I heart this fic. It's another one I'm reccing this month. It works because, to steal from
thefourthvine, in the show, it totally feels like what happens in this fic is about to happen all the time. Omgthey'resomarried.
Cold Nights in the Yukon by Nel Ani- Dead!Bob. Hysterical Dead!Bob. Laugh out loud funny lines. And the end is just cute.
Stop. Fast Forward. Rewind. by
estrella30- Estrella's known for humor, hotness, and spot-on characterization. This fic has all three. Made me bust out laughing. Okay, and if that doesn't grab you, how about the author's summary: "Somewhere in a small cabin in Canada, Ray and Fraser watch porn." Ahahaha! Goreadnow.
Falling for You by
china_shop- This was originally posted as three separate stories up on
ds_flashfiction. I love this mostly because of the second part- it's so...Fraser. Mmm.
The Outline of a Circle by
pearl_o- Pearl_O's style is spare, most of her fics are subtle and angsty. The understated ending is powerful.
The Delivery by Rowan F.- I know the link is wrong, but I don't have her password yet. However, I do have this saved on my computer. I'll send it to you. (ETA- new link! It works!) Basically, it's another of my favs. 3rd Person POV. Stella goes over to Ray's and finds something unexpected. Great line: "Just 'cause my boyfriend's cuter than yours that's no reason for rudeness."
Executor by Kat Allison. Yeah, it's a deathfic. But it's such a heartrending, well-written death fic. If you're in the mood.
Exposures by Dira Sudis- Another Welsh-centric deathfic. Creepy too. And sooo sad. But really good.
First by Ardent- adorable and kooky. Just like the show.
Medium Size Stories
Slice by Brighid. Sweet, warm and wonderful. Makes me want to bake pie.
Theories of Flight by Lamardeuse- She's a woefully underrated author, who's recently penned her 50th dS fic. All of her stuff is good; this was actually dS story #1, though you can't tell. It's really moving.
A is for Apple by
pearl_o- Awesome fic. It's happy too. I love the gimmick.
Watershed by Nifra Idril- I love the tension here. Great Ray voice. What's it about? Ray quote: "You're the super genius Mountie, so don't play dumb with me, because I know better. This is fucked, and it has been for a while, and it's your fault, Fraser, okay? Everything was *fine* before, back when we were just partners and neither of us had any kind of ideas about the other one, and now things are - they're not right, and it's messing us up, it's messing *me* up, Fraser. So you have to stop being in love with me."
Heavy Bag by Kat Allison- Ouch. Brilliant.
Parental Guidance by Alanna, Starfish and Kass- wonderful cliche fic. Ray invites Fraser over to dinner at his parents', and they mistakenly seem to think that Fraser and Ray are a couple. Huh. I wonder why?
Blowback by LaT- "Asylum" based fic. Oh, Asylum, that slashiest of episodes. Great Ray voice here.
Surface by Kalena- Let’s just consider the opening paragraph, shall we?
Fraser was back from his visit to the Northland. Well, it wasn't very far north, just over the border at Niagara Falls, but it was still inside that big empty outline map of Canada. And right now he wanted to know less about Canada than ever before. Canada was the place where Fraser's new girlfriend lived, and he didn't want to think about that at all.
“Wait- woah!” I said. “Excuse me? No. What the hell do you mean Fraser has a girlfriend? A girlfriend who’s not a girl of the week or a complete raving psycho?? What?"
I guess you could say the opening caught my attention.
I think this might be one of the most original set ups in F/K ever. See, Fraser’s not supposed to have girlfriends. His romantic life is supposed to be lonely and awkward and tragic and short-lived and basically non-existent (until, of course, RayK comes into the picture and they live happily ever after). Really. A nice, steady girlfriend? That just ain’t right, people.
See, and this is the deceptively simple brilliance of this fic. It’s from RayK’s POV, and luckily for me, where Fraser’s girlfriend is concerned, Ray feels exactly the same way I do.
The Key by Shay Sheridan- A fairy tale fic. So original and cute.
Like Some Strange Shadow by cherryice- She's a newer writer in the fandom. This one is lush and bittersweet and wonderful.
Longer Fics- The Fandom is Full of Them
American Way by Resonant
Also by Res, Teeth of the Hydra. This one has a pretty nifty plot that reminds me of Petra.
A Modest Proposal, also by Res. (Res is a goddess. Goddess.) One of those fuck-buddies turning into something more fics. I love fuck buddies turning into something more fics.
Also ALSO by Res, Broadway Hotel- My favorite story by her in due South. Basically, it can sort of be summed up by this quote from Call of the Wild:
RayK: You ever feel like you don't know who you are? Like if you weren't around somebody, or that someone wasn't around you, then you wouldn't be you, or at least not the you that you think you are. You ever think like that?
Thatcher: Never.
RayK: Me either.
Bone and Astride have collaborated on four stories, and they're all worth reading. They have good plots, characterization, and lots of really hot smut. Here ya go:
How Ray Kowalski Got His Groove Back- generally thought of to be their best one, but I happen to like-
The Course- better. But that's probably because I have a total kink for undercover fics.
Unguarded Protectorate
Lastly, The Better Angels. Another great one.
Singly, Bone's also written the Layers Series, and Old Lock, New Key, both of which are good. OL, NK is especially impressive in that it manages to be emotionally satisfying even though it's set directly after the first episode of Season 3, when Fraser and Ray are still strangers.
Thermoform by Kellie Matthews- Kellie is one of DS's most popular writers. Personally, not all of her stuff resonates with me, but when it does...wow. This is a great one by her. As is...
Boardwalk by Kellie M. This fic wins best RayK mental image ever. Undercover fic! Woo!
Like a House on Fire by Kellie Matthews and Beth H.- I loved this story when it first came out and still do today.
Blueprint by Journey- Post CoTW fic that's long, vaguely schmoopy, but well worth it. The index cards at the end are just so freakin' cute I can't stand it.
The AUs
I am a junkie for good dS AUs. Seriously they might be my favorite kind of fic ever. I dunno why. Here are all the good ones.
Family Portrait by Journey- Sort of like a Harlequin romance fic AU. Ray and Stella ended up having kids, but she's passed away. So you've got single parent!Ray and of course he meets Fraser and...Yeah, it's a kid fic, but it's really adorable and well written, and only a little bit schmooopy.
Academic Punk by The Hoyden- Fraser and Ray are English professors. Ray's the academic punk of the title. You might not think it would work, but it does, and it's awesome. And that's not just the English major in me talking.
Can't Stop Falling by Starfish- The best mechanic!RayK AU ever.
Four Ways Benton Fraser and Ray Kowalski Never Met, and One Way They Did by Lyra Sena- I. Love. This. Fic. So much. Five shorter AU stories all together; it's like an AU goodie-bag. Really you probably should have a pretty good familiarity with canon in order to appreciate the sheer brilliance of the way Lyra subtly manipulates it. The first one is a pretty standard AU, but then it goes on from there and the results are wonderful. Lyra is the master of mixing canon with the alternate reality she’s created, creating a unsettling mix of right/wrong. Which, to me, is really the best part about AUs- a completely different world that still has that line from canon, that flash of rightness to it. It really makes you appreciate the canon even more.
Hawks and Hands by Dira Sudis- The Hockey AU. 1150k. The longest fic I think I've ever read. It's a little hard to get into and it's certainly a long haul, but it's so well researched and characterized. Angst-fest though. But hey, you learn somethin' about Hockey in the process.
Palimpsest by Purna- The RayK-as-a-pilot AU. Really, remarkably excellent.
The Way That We Used to Be by Starfish- The "Bar AU". Both Fraser and Ray have suffered some setbacks. Ray was shot in the leg, and now owns a bar. Fraser, a drifter, in exile, wanders in. It goes from there.
Pas de Deux by Sihaya Black- Fraser's still a Mountie. He signs up for dance classes so he'll be able to dance at his wedding...to none other than Victoria. *duh duh duuuuuh* But guess who's the dance instructor? That's right. RayK. You guessed it. I heart this fic. It's great.
Ray/Ray
Ah Ray/Ray. None of our friends like them but me. You might not want to read any until you've seen Call of the Wild, which is the only canon interaction between the Rays. Totally different in tone from the destined, OTPness of F/K. Generally more real. More gritty. This is one of those "We hate each other but we're fucking" pairings that I love so well. And sure, maybe you're thinking, "But what about Fraser? Is he all alone?" And the answer is usually yes. But it hurts so good. In fact, most Ray/Ray usually involves both Rays in the fallout of broken relationships with Stella and Fraser in some way or another.
The What It Is I See In You Series, by Hth- You have to scroll down to find it. Some of the formatting is off, you'll probably want to read the lj versions. The link is to the 2Rays index, which has pretty much every Ray/Ray fic ever, in case you're interested. Hth was probably one of the first people to ever write Ray/Ray. We can be glad she did. In any case, this was one of the first Ray/Ray fics I read. I read it because I was a little bored and decided to try liking a new pairing. This time, it was Ray/Ray. I was reading along, enjoying but not really buying it, and then I came to the second to last fic in the series, Close to the Chest. And again, it was the fic that made this pairing click for me. The series also has a brilliantly written take on Vecchio in Vegas that's worth the price of admission all on it's own. Read it.
You Get What You Need by Aerye, and it's recently written prequel, Speaking in Tongues- Besides the title being my favorite Stones' song, this fic centers around that oh so common Ray/Ray theme. Both Rays, back in Chicago alone, after breaking up with Stella and Fraser. They're both hurting. Neither is what the other is looking for. And yet, it works. YGWYN is such a gorgeously written piece. I love it.
Gas Food Lodging by BrooklineGirl- she is, hands down, my favorite Ray/Ray author. She's wonderful with them. This fic, like so many Ray/Ray stories is...well really smutty.
Not That Easy by BrooklineGirl- another great Ray/Ray fic.
Reset by Lamardeuse. It's good.
Stess is the Silent Killer by lynnmonster- I like my Ray/Ray snarky with a little tenderness peeking through.
Stripped by Sprat- One of those near death experience fics. You know what I mean. Hot and a little cute.
Gen/Het Fic
Capital 'M' Mountie by shrift-RayK reflecting on his new partner. Makes me smile every time.
Advisee Record, Academic Year 1979-1980 by Kat Allison- Document-based fic. Really fascinating picture of RayK in college before he drops out.
Rogue by Kat Allison- Set around the episode 'Ladies Man'. You should probably watch it first. Really kickass dangerous!Fraser.
Sibylla ti theleis by Hth- RayV/Stella, Fraser/RayK??. This fic is so awesome. One of the best stories to come out of
ds_seekritsanta this year. A RayV fic. It has T.S. Eliot Quotes and everything. Give it a chance.
There you go. Should be enough to keep you occupied for a while. :) I might be updating it with actual fic summaries when I have time. Enjoy!
ETA: Okay, I'm adding in some more...
Recs Pages
ds_flashback- Great reccing community. Lot's of classics.
Polyamorous Recomendations- One of my favorite rec pages. Just use the scroll bar on the side to get to DS. Also, take a look at the other fandoms if you have time. (Ha.)
Justacat's due South Resources- Absolutely mind boggling catalogue of recs. Hasn't been updated in a bit, though. Justacat also has links to practically every other dS recs page ever. Check out her Desert Island Fic (DIF) list if you want something more managable.
Cimorene's Recs- The first dS rec page I ever sorted through. Lots of good stuff, not really organized, but she's updating it.
