merelynLast night's Grey's Anatomy made me really really angry. Alex, who is a character I've tried to like despite his frequent fuck-ups and asshattery, made me want to punch him in the face everytime he opened his mouth. Because, hi. Regardless of what you feel about abortion, getting your tubes tied is a completely different matter. That is a case where it is about nothing more than a woman's body, her body, which means that her husband (and certainly fucking Alex) had little to no right to try and be a part of that decision, when it was perfectly clear that she was going to be the primary one to care for any more kids.
This episode was a sterling example of the way that pregnancy and the heterosexual hegemony of the nuclear family has been the primary mechanism for oppressing women throughout history. Because God Dammit, after you've had seven fucking kids mostly thanks to the dated, patriarchal edicts of the Catholic Church whether you wanted them or not, and after you have and will probably give up the rest of you life for these kids, you certainly have a right to do something about it and say no more without giving up your sex life and without your husband thinking that you're a lesser, sinning being who is going to hell.
It makes me so, so sad that the woman felt she couldn't tell her husband, that she felt that she had no choice but to fuck over Addison in order to perserve her marriage. Because the thing is? Alex was right in a way, because as much as he was completely over the line here, I think what really bothered him more than anything was the subterfuge. Because the wife shouldn't have had to go behind her husband's back in order to get her tubes tied. She should have been able to tell him straight to his face. I wish we lived in a world where that was easier for women to do.
Conclusion: Addison is fucking awesome. I love her, and am reeeally starting to get pissed at McDreamy for taking his Meredith issues into their bedroom, because she so much deserves better.
