Soooo. Torchwood. Finally go to see it this weekend. Beware of falling spoilers behind the cut tags.

At this point I should be used to my favorite character getting killed off, but I still have no coping skillz. Oh, Ianto. From the mood spoilers I'd pretty much already figured it out, but I was still hoping I was wrong up until the last minutes of Day 5. I will let [personal profile] rageprufrock's post speak for me. Spoilers in comments maybe? IDK. If you haven't already been spoiled for this thing a)Why are you reading this anyway? and b)I'm impressed.

ANYWAY:

THE LESSON IS: ALCOHOL SOLVES EVERYTHING.

Also, in terms of meta, I don't know if any of you go on io9.com, but they have a really good article up about where Torchwood can go from here.

I think this is pretty much dead on in terms of where the narrative can and should go.

It also makes me wonder whether RTD had this planned from the beginning, or at least from the end of Season 2 onward. I can see how Fragments (Oh Fragments!) and Exit Wounds were just one long brush stoke building up (or down) to the bleak place where Day 5 came to rest. Perhaps we could even trace it back to Owen's first death, the point where the show really started to make choices with inevitable consequences that couldn't be hand-waved away.

I have a really hard time imagining how the show could come back from this, even if the ratings do make that inevitable. Of course I'm pretty sure I'd watch no matter what, because if done properly, a show Torchwood's slow and painful rebuilding process has the chance to be as painfully moving if not as explosive as CoE. Also, I'd tune in not the least because I know I'd harbor some misguided hope of them pulling a Doctor Who and giving us a poorly thought out and self-indulgent happy ending in regards to Ianto. (What? :P)

Not much else to say, but this was my favorite part:

It needs to be a regular television show again, showing us from time to time how Captain Jack helps get a cat out of a metaphorical tree. So if I were Russell T. Davies, I'd push for a regular 13-episode series next year — it can end with some kind of massive world-shattering climax, but it can also have room for episodes where there's a sex monster or Captain John
(sic) has dangerous underwear or Cardiff is nearly sucked into a null dimension, or whatever.

Oh, it would heal some small part of my busted soul to watch a show where Jack has crazy underwear and saves kittens. SUCH A SAP, I KNOW. WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME, RTD?

Lastly, the open spoiler thread on io9 also inspired the following conversation between myself and [personal profile] circa_eve:

[personal profile] merelyn: Also, on the open spoiler thread there some one asked about why the hell no one thought to care about poor Myfanwy blowing up in Day One, and this is the best reply ever: "On second thought, maybe he was out hunting for the evening. He's done it before. I can't take anything else dying. So yes, that's what happened."
[personal profile] circa_eve: Aww. V. true
[personal profile] merelyn: So true.
[personal profile] circa_eve: I totally forgot about Myfawny
[personal profile] merelyn: I KNOW!!
[personal profile] merelyn: So did everyone!!
[personal profile] merelyn: DDDD;
[personal profile] circa_eve: :(
[personal profile] merelyn: Seriously though, there should be a fic where Gwen goes and looks at the Hub wreckage to mourn and Myfanwy comes back and settles next to her and they're both sad and they both miss Jack and Ianto.
[personal profile] circa_eve: Yes.
[personal profile] circa_eve: And then it gestures to her stomach with its beak.
[personal profile] merelyn: Aw.
[personal profile] circa_eve: And Gwen laugh/cries.
[personal profile] merelyn: And maybe it becomes like the freaky guard dog for Gwen's new house and eats all the Weevils that try to get at her.
[personal profile] merelyn: (Assuming of course that Torchwood isn't rebuilt blahblahblah.)
[personal profile] circa_eve: No, I like that better. I like her having a guard dactyl.
[personal profile] merelyn: It's so cute!
[personal profile] circa_eve: And her kid can go on rides when it's little around the back yard.
[personal profile] merelyn: Yes! Especially since I think Myfanwy maybe never liked her as much before but now they've bonded together over the tragedy.
[personal profile] circa_eve: Yes I think he was closest to Ianto and Jack.
[personal profile] merelyn: For sure.
[personal profile] circa_eve: But now they have a survivor bond and he is strangely protective and won't let even stray cats wonder in the property.
[personal profile] merelyn: Exactly. Like he and the neighborhood feral cat have a standoff (Cat. Hissing. At. Myfanwy.) that ends in tragedy and none of the cats ever go near the house again. And Myfanwy is proud of himself and then pukes up cat bones on the porch to show Gwen.
[personal profile] circa_eve: And Gwen ends up buying the neighborhood families lots of replacement kittens.
[personal profile] merelyn: Yep.
[personal profile] circa_eve: And Rhys has a blustery love for it, but continues to insist that they throw it into the rift.
[personal profile] merelyn: Exactly! Damn where is this fic??
I almost feel like posting this in my lj.
[personal profile] circa_eve: You should!
