Initial, I'm-still-in-the-middle-of-it-impressions of
cesperanza's new, epic, OH MY GOD READ IT NOW story, Written by the Victors, cut-tagged for spoilers:
So. Very. Cool.
cesperanza's stuff- especially her later SGA work, I think, though that's probably only because I was very late to the due South party and it's been years since I've read much in it- is always incredibly smart. She keeps finding interesting, unconventional angles to approach things and characters, and she manages to work in so much commentary about canon, fanon, textuality and just LIFE in all her stories, but in an incredibly organic way. (For the ultimate fanfiction commentary on the dynamics of incest fic, read Last Will and Testament; for the ultimate fanfiction commentary on the suicidally self-sacrificing John Sheppard trope, MVP, etc.)
Anyway, I'm only a little of the way in Written by the Victors, but HOLY CRAP. HOW COOL IS THE NARRATIVE STYLE? I'm a relatively visual person, and when I read most fanfiction, I see it in my head like a movie, in the multiplex of my brain where it's gay romance night every day of the week. But, BUT, this is like fanfiction as a documentary, as narrative nonfiction. It's so meta-textual! The English major in me is drooling, asdfghjkl;kjhgf.
Okay, done! *goes back to reading*
