Job blathering

So the job interview went really well. In fact, the HR woman called me a few hours after and told that they want to "move (me) further in the process," i.e. reference check, etc. I'm 95% sure I have the job, but...I'm not sure if I want it. It's a lot more technical than I thought. It's basically back-end Ebook production stuff that could, I'm afraid, involve me being buried in spreadsheets and Excel files and doing things that involve words like "data redundancy". However, I'm sure it would probably pay pretty well for entry level, considering it's very skills-based, not just one of a million editorial assistant jobs. And I'm qualified to do it, I *could* do it, Penguin is a great company, but I don't know if I want an I.T. job. I suppose it depends on whether I'd have the opportunity to move to something else somewhere down the road, more online marketing/strategy based. Also, the salary. Also, maybe I should just suck it up and pay my dues like everyone else and be grateful for the opportunity.

But, to make things more complicated, I have an interview this Wednesday at PlanetOut Inc. for a Marketing Assistant position. And they publish The Advocate and LGBT books and it'd be so very, very awesome to work for them. Of course, I don't have that job locked up at all.

But what if I do get offered the Penguin job next week even before this interview, and they don't give me a long time to think about the offer, and then I go on the PlanetOut interview and it goes well but I don't hear back from them in time? And then I accept the Penguin job, and get offered the PlanetOut job but it's too late 'cause I've already accepted this other offer and it'd be tantamount to spitting in the face of my Penguin contact guy (who's incredibly nice), my dad's friend who introduced us (who's hilarious and a little scary), and my dad to revoke a job acceptance?

Of course this is just me freaking out about something that hasn't even come to pass.

Oh, and whatever job I will hopefully end up getting, where/with whom will I live? AAHH.

This is very frustrating, and I don't know what to say. But, um, serious congrats on a good interview!

Uggh, real life = scary.

Real life suuuuucks. And I might have to move somewhere. Not for college, but for REAL. It's very strange.

[identity profile] jainanicole.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That IS strange. Yikes. Where are you looking, or is it really just wherever you get a job?

[identity profile] merelyn.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well hopefully I can get a job in NYC. And I like New York at lot (though no trees and it smells like garbage instead of grass in the summertime), but it's strange to contemplate being a permanent resident.

I will say it again. Real life is scary.

If Penguin wants to hire you, tell them that you need a little time to think about it. Worst case senarios, if you do accept the Penguin job and then PlanetOut offers you a position you want more, call Penguin and say "I'm very sorry but it won't work out." Or if you turn down Penguin and get turned down by PlanetOut, know that you are quite hire-able and will probably find something else very soon. You're in a win win position here...make them fight for you!

Thanks, good advice. We'll see how it goes, and hopefully the timing won't blow up in my face.

I'm in some agreement w/Wordweaver. I would phrase "I need time to think" more along the lines of. "I'm so excited about your offer/penguin is one of the top companies I would like to work for etc. I wold, however, like a bit more time (you might want to specify how much) to consider my other offers." Or something like that. It makes you sound extra desirable. Like playing hard to get in the dating circus, but with employment...yeah.
That's how I got my super sweet Grad funding anyway and entry level jobs seem to follow pretty much the same formula as far as anyone can tell me.

[identity profile] merelyn.livejournal.com 2007-07-15 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think I'll be able to ask the Penguin people (assuming I get that offer) for some time to think about it, and then hopefully that'll give the PlanetOut people time to tell me one way or the other.

I hope things work out for you! I'm sure it will be great...but I know how frustrating job decisions can be....

[identity profile] merelyn.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I actually ended up turning down the Penguin job, because they wanted to fill it YESTERDAY and my instincts were just telling me just not to do it. And the PlanetOut thing did go really well, so well see about that one. *crosses fingers*

What are you up to, hun?

[identity profile] penguinchrissy.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just working until I figure out what I want to do next...I have no idea...what do you think I'd be good at? :P

[identity profile] merelyn.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, post-graduation angst blows. Have you thought about grad school at all? Or is there an industry in particular that you want to work for? The dream job you were going to have when you were 10 that is still rattling around in the back of your head?

[identity profile] penguinchrissy.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well...I used to want to be a doctor...but I'm 99% sure I don't want to do that anymore. I'm still considering some jobs in the medical field...but I'm also looking at non-profit and/ or possibly PR/ advertising.

I'm open to ideas too...do you have any idea what I would be good at? :P
