I'm not even really in SPN fandom (circa_eve is, but has only succeeded in making me watch a few episodes and maybe read some J2 AUs), and I haven't seen tonight's ep, but can someone please explain to me what the hell happened on the show that made my flist explode all over itself in a fascinating but so freaking vague way? Seriously, I don't even mind spoilers.

YES. THE ABYSS LOOKED BACK. IT WAS WEIRD. WEIRD AND FANTASTIC BUT ALSO WEIRD. THIS IS A VAGUELY SPOILERY EXPLANATION OF THAT.

The show did one of these weird, Hollywood A.D. "there are books being written about our lives!" episodes, things get increasingly meta from there until Sam and Dean are literally looking up fandom on the internet. "What are slash fans?" Dean asks Sam. HOLY FUCK, answers fandom in unison. They mentioned Sam/Dean by name.

There was other stuff, too - it was so meta that the fourth wall actually began to dissolve under a pummeling of self-referential jibes - and also some cool plot, but it was MOSTLY THAT, FUCKING HELL, SHOW. YOU ARE A CRAZY BASTARD AND WE LOVE IT. And if you are me, still eyetwitching over it. But also... the love?

WHY IS MY FLIST NOT EXPLODING? I need someone to discuss this with, damnit! It was just a really... amazing episode? With a combination of very good humour, excellent plot movement and some jibes at fandom... there is nothing better. Sam had to explain to Dean what slash fanfiction was and Dean was all, 'Dude, they know we're brothers, right?' Which is what I'm assuming fandom is exploding about right now.

My brain actually did a thing as I was watching where the 2% that wasn't squeeing went, 'Wow, we can't write about these characters the same way ever again if they know that we write about them like this. I guess this isn't canon then!' And that is where I will stay. So I can squee in peace. XD;;

I think last night's episode was worth watching just for the sheer squirm-inducing OHNOTHEYDIDN'T shout out to slash fandom. Interestingly, there's an article on them in this week's Entertainment Weekly, and "Wincest" is mentioned by name IN THE OPENING PARAGRAPH. It's like everyone KNOWS or something. *still weirded out*

Otherwise, it's a decent show, one I certainly don't mind watching when it's on, and the same goes for reading the occasional J2 AU fic.
